How to Clean your Keyboard
- Shut down and unplugging: First of all, shut down your computer. Then unplug your keyboard (if you are using the wired desktop keyboard). As per O. - Spraying or Wiping: If you own a can of compressed air, you can spray it in between the keys or you can work with a small soft-bristled dusting brush. Make sure, you are not holding the can upside down. If you don’t have any of them just use a damp and soft cloth, like microfiber, to wipe the keys and keyboard. Microfiber is the best at consuming dust and grime, so a quick swipe over the keys ease remove some of the grime that has built up on your keyboard.
- Usage of isopropyl alcohol: Dip a cotton swab into some gentle isopropyl alcohol and brush it in the area surrounding each key. Alcohol evaporates instantly. It is a safer alternative to using water. You can use cotton buds for maximum safety issues. Then use a dry, lint-free cloth or microfiber to remove dust and polish the keyboard.
- Underneath cleaning: For deep cleaning, firstly take a photo of your entire keyboard to make sure you don’t do a mess while re-building your keyboard. Gently pry up the keycaps using a small flat-head screwdriver or a butter knife. After removing the letter keys, you can wash them individually with water and soap, or alcohol, to remove dirt or to tackle a sticky mess. Again, you can blow away the dirt using compressed air.
- Cleaning keyboard base: You can wipe the keyboard base using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab or lint-free cloth. Wipe it fully dry with a lint-free cloth before replacing those keys.
- Replacing the keycaps: Replace the keycaps when they are completely dry and you are satisfied with the cleanliness and tidiness. Put each keycap where it belongs.
